How online prescriptions work in Florida

The short answer
In Florida, a clinician treating you by telehealth must hold a Florida license or be registered with the state as an out-of-state telehealth provider. They must meet the same standard of care as an in-person visit. They can evaluate you online, decide whether a prescription is appropriate and send it to a licensed pharmacy.
Who can treat you
Florida law defines a telehealth provider as a professional licensed in Florida, licensed through a compact Florida belongs to, or registered with the appropriate Florida board as an out-of-state telehealth provider. You can look up a Florida license on the Department of Health's license verification site.
What a visit involves
- A secure medical intake about your history, medications and goals.
- A review by a licensed clinician. Some treatments, such as testosterone, require a live video visit.
- Lab work when the treatment calls for it.
- A decision. The clinician may prescribe, suggest something else, or decide that treatment isn't appropriate.
- If prescribed, a licensed pharmacy prepares and ships the medication.
The standard of care is the same
Florida requires telehealth care to meet the prevailing standard for in-person care in the state, and visits must be documented in your medical record to the same standard.
