Testosterone therapy by telehealth in Florida: how it works

By the Next You Health team · Updated · 5 min read

Medical review pending. This guide has not yet been reviewed by our medical director.

The short answer

Testosterone is a Schedule III controlled substance. Florida's telehealth law restricts Schedule II prescribing, not Schedule III, and federal DEA rules currently allow Schedule III–V prescribing over an audio-video visit without a prior in-person exam through December 31, 2026. A clinician still has to evaluate you, review lab work and decide whether therapy is appropriate.

Why testosterone is handled differently

Federal law places anabolic steroids, including testosterone, in Schedule III. That means a prescriber needs a DEA registration, and telehealth prescribing has to meet DEA rules in addition to Florida law.

The federal telemedicine rules

DEA and HHS extended the telemedicine flexibilities for controlled medications through December 31, 2026. Under them, a DEA-registered practitioner can prescribe Schedule II–V medications through an audio-video visit without first seeing the patient in person, if the prescription is for a legitimate medical purpose and meets the other requirements.

These are temporary rules. DEA and HHS are working on permanent regulations, and the requirements after 2026 may be different. We'll update this page when they change.

What Florida law adds

Florida's telehealth statute, section 456.47, requires telehealth providers to meet the same standard of care as an in-person visit in Florida. It bars using telehealth to prescribe Schedule II controlled substances except in specific situations. It doesn't add a separate Schedule III restriction. Providers must be licensed in Florida or registered as out-of-state telehealth providers.

Labs and monitoring

Testosterone can affect red blood cell counts, fertility, mood and cardiovascular risk factors, so blood work comes before and during treatment. At Next You Health, the men's initial lab panel is $159 and maintenance panels are $129. The women's initial panel is $89 and maintenance panels are $149.

Cost at Next You Health

  • Men's testosterone: injection $159 or cream $139, billed every 28 days.
  • Women's testosterone: gel $129 or injection $149, billed every 28 days.
  • Related options a clinician may consider: enclomiphene ($129), hCG ($299), anastrozole ($119).
